St. Edward Religious Education Program for Children

WELCOME to St. Edward's Religious Education Program. Religious Education is a comprehensive program for children in grades Pre-K through 8 who attend public schools. Families are encouraged to keep their children in the program throughout the children's elementary school years. Attending mass weekly is an expectation of all families who participate in our program.
It is our privilege to assist you in the education and formation of your children in the Roman Catholic tradition. Our goal is to live and learn and pray together as a community of faith; for the real church is found in the quality of our relationship with God, with ourselves, and with one another.
The Religious Education Program recognizes that parents are indeed the primary religious educators. It is through parent(s), together with and supported by other members of the faith community, that the Gospel of Jesus is proclaimed and celebrated.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION
If you are interested in registering your child for Religious Education classes, please email Lourdes Ryczek, CRE at StEdwardRelEd@yahoo.com with the information requested on the Registration form below, or call her at 773-835-3622.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - R.C.I.A.

RCIA is our Catholic Christian way of welcoming new members to our faith. Becoming a Catholic is understood as a journey of faith in which one acquires both the knowledge and experience of Christ through Scripture study, instruction, prayer, and sharing the life of faith with other members of our parish-faith community.
RCIA is open to non-baptized adults, baptized non-Catholic adults, and baptized Catholic adults who have not received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, or who desire a greater knowledge and understanding of their faith. Formal sessions begin in the fall and meet weekly.
Activities associated with RCIA are weekly instruction and Scripture discussions which culminate in the reception of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Service.

St. Edward SPRED Center

Our SPRED Center offers a program of religious education designed to meet the spiritual needs of children from 11 to 16 years of age who have learning or developmental special needs. Within the SPRED community, children and catechists grow in faith and receive God's graces through the sacraments. Catechists and children meet every other Saturday morning from mid-October through May in the Rectory Hall from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. The Catechists' prep/planning sessions for the adults are on the previous Friday at 7:30 pm.

The goal of SPRED is to help these special children to become active participants in the worshipping body of our parish family.

Sacramental Preparation for Parents

The Church declares that parents are the primary and most influential teachers of their children. To nourish and enhance the faith of parents of children preparing to receive a sacrament, attendance at a small group adult session is required. All sessions are held on Wednesday evenings.

Infant Baptism (Birth to age five)
Parents attend one preparation session held on the last Wednesday evening of each month (except during Lent).

First Reconcilitation
Second grade parents attend one preparation session in mid-January.

First Eucharist
Second grade parents attend one preparation session in late April.

Confirmation
Seventh/Eighth grade parents attend two preparation sessions; one in mid-February and one in mid-March.
